MEANINGFUL PLANET FAIR USE POLICY

Last Updated: 20 November 2025

1. Introduction and Purpose

This Fair Use Policy ("Policy") forms part of your contract with Meaningful Planet and should be read in conjunction with our Terms and Conditions. This Policy sets out acceptable usage of our mobile services to ensure network quality and fair access for all customers while preventing misuse.

This Policy applies to all Meaningful Planet customers using our SIM subscription services.

2. General Usage Obligations

2.1 Permitted Use

You must only use our services and SIM cards for:

  • Private, personal, and legitimate consumer purposes, or
  • Legitimate business purposes appropriate to your service subscription

2.2 Prohibited Activities

You must not use our services or SIM cards for:

Commercial Resale or Gateway Activities

  • Reselling our services to third parties
  • Using gateway devices, SIM boxes, or routing equipment without our prior written consent
  • Call forwarding services, concurrent calling, or onward calling services
  • Establishing connections where the SIM is tethered via cable, Bluetooth, or WiFi to make large volumes of calls or send large volumes of texts

Artificially Inflated or Automated Traffic

  • Generating artificially inflated traffic
  • Persistently sending automated or unsolicited text messages
  • Sending bulk SMS messages or unusually high volumes of messages
  • Making unusually high volumes of calls or calls to premium rate numbers for revenue generation
  • Making multiple calls simultaneously

Inappropriate Device Usage

  • Using SIM cards in devices other than those they are supplied for or intended for (e.g., using a mobile SIM in a fixed-line gateway or modem without explicit permission)
  • Using mobile devices as permanent monitoring equipment (e.g., baby monitors, security cameras)

Illegal or Harmful Activities

  • Any fraudulent, criminal, or unlawful activity
  • Making, sending, uploading, downloading, or distributing content that is:
  • Offensive, abusive, indecent, defamatory, obscene, or menacing
  • In breach of copyright, intellectual property rights, or privacy rights
  • Spam, nuisance, or hoax communications
  • Evading or attempting to evade our security measures or network management controls

3. Data Fair Use Policies

3.1 Domestic Unlimited Data Plans

Fair Usage Threshold

Customers on unlimited data plans may use data without a hard cap for personal or appropriate business use. Appropriate business purposes’ means ordinary, day‑to‑day business communications and data usage consistent with typical mobile device usage, and does not include activities intended to replace fixed data services or support high‑volume automated operations. However, to protect network quality for all customers, we monitor usage patterns.

If your data usage exceeds 250GB per month twice or more in a 6-month period, we may:

  1. Contact you to discuss your usage patterns
  2. Investigate whether your usage is consistent with this Policy
  3. Implement traffic management measures, including speed throttling

Speed Throttling After Fair Use Limit

When you reach 250GB of domestic data usage in a billing month on an unlimited plan, your data speeds may be reduced to 2Mbps for the remainder of that billing period. This ensures you can continue to use data while maintaining network quality for all customers. The 250GB threshold is set to protect network performance and ensure fair access for all customers, based on observed capacity management and wholesale network constraints.

  • Speeds will return to normal at the start of your next billing period
  • You will receive notification by SMS when you reach 80% (200GB) and 100% (250GB) of the fair use threshold
  • Essential services such as calls and texts remain unaffected

3.2 Network Protection Measures

We reserve the right to implement appropriate traffic management, shaping, or throttling measures to:

  • Protect our network from excessive congestion
  • Ensure fair access for all customers
  • Manage specific types of data usage that may impact service levels

These measures may be applied:

  • At specific times of day or in specific locations
  • To specific types of traffic (e.g., peer-to-peer file sharing, large file downloads/uploads)
  • When individual usage patterns risk degrading service for other customers

3.3 Tethering and Hotspot Usage

You may use your device as a personal hotspot or for tethering on unlimited data plans, subject to the fair use limits set out in this Policy.

However, you must not:

  • Regularly tether to 12 or more devices simultaneously
  • Use tethering to provide a substitute for fixed-line broadband service on a permanent basis
  • Use tethering for commercial purposes (e.g., providing WiFi service to customers)

Where we identify tethering that exceeds these guidelines, we may implement traffic management measures or contact you to discuss your usage. The limit of 12 tethered devices is used to prevent network‑impacting hotspot usage patterns that resemble commercial or fixed‑line replacement services.

4. Roaming Fair Use Policy

4.1 General Roaming Principles

Roaming services are provided for periodic travel such as holidays, business trips, and short breaks. Our roaming services are not intended for:

  • Permanent or semi-permanent residence abroad
  • Using UK SIM cards abroad for extended periods
  • Using more of your allowance abroad than in the UK

4.2 EU/EEA Roaming Data Caps

Standard Data Plans

For customers with domestic data allowances, a fair use policy applies when roaming in the EU/EEA and Switzerland:

  • You may use up to 25% of your monthly domestic data allowance (rounded down to the nearest GB) when roaming in the EU/EEA, with a maximum roaming cap of 25GB

Examples:

  1. 3GB domestic plan = 750MB monthly roaming available
  2. 30GB domestic plan = 7.5GB monthly roaming available
  3. 100GB domestic plan = 25GB monthly roaming available

Unlimited Data Plans

For customers on unlimited domestic data plans, a roaming cap of 25GB per billing month applies when roaming in the EU/EEA and Switzerland.

4.3 Roaming Data Cap Exceeded - Your Options

When you reach your roaming data cap, you will receive an SMS notification and your data services while roaming will be suspended. You have three options to continue using data abroad:

Option 1: Upgrade Your Data Plan

  • Upgrade to a higher domestic data plan, which will increase your roaming allocation according to the 25% formula (subject to the 25GB maximum cap)
  • Contact customer support to discuss suitable upgrade options

Option 2: Purchase a Daily Roaming Bundle

  • Add a daily roaming data pass to your account
  • Roaming bundles are valid for 24 hours from activation

Option 3: Purchase a Travel eSIM

  • Purchase a local or regional travel eSIM from Meaningful Planet via your account, or from a third party provider
  • Enjoy competitive local data rates and seamless activation

Alternatively, you may wait until your next billing period when your roaming allowance will reset.

4.4 Surcharges After Roaming Cap

If you use roaming services in the EU/EEA or Switzerland after your fair use roaming allowance has been fully consumed, and you have not purchased a roaming bundle or travel eSIM, your EU/EEA or Switzerland roaming will be suspended and you will need to contact support to remove the suspension. Once the suspnesion is removed, continued usage will be subject to EU/EEA roaming surcharges.

These surcharges are:

  • Data: £3.19 per GB (charged per MB: £0.0031 per MB)
  • Calls: £0.0396 per minute
  • SMS: £0.0160 per SMS

These rates apply only to usage within the EU/EEA and Switzerland after your monthly fair use roaming allowance is exhausted.

All other roaming destinations (Zones 2–6) are charged at our standard roaming rates, which vary by zone.

For the full list of zones and surcharge rates, please refer to our Roaming Destinations & Pricing Guide available in the help section of our website.

Presence Requirements

Roaming services are intended for periodic travel. To maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and this Policy, you must demonstrate a stable link to the United Kingdom.

We will consider you to have a stable link to the UK if you meet at least one of the following conditions:

  1. **Time-based: **You spend at least 50% of your time during any 4-month period physically present within the UK; OR
  2. Usage-based: At least 50% of your mobile usage (calls, texts, and data combined) occurs on the UK network during any 4-month period

Monitoring and Notification

If your usage patterns suggest you may not have a stable link to the UK, we will:

  1. Monitor your usage over a 4-month period
  2. Send you an SMS notification alerting you to the potential issue
  3. Request that you provide evidence of your stable link to the UK within 14 days
  4. If satisfactory evidence is not provided, apply surcharges as set out in section 4.4

Acceptable Evidence

Evidence of a stable link to the UK may include:

  • Proof of UK residence (utility bills, tenancy agreements, mortgage statements)
  • Employment contracts or payslips showing UK-based employment
  • Documentation showing temporary assignment abroad with intent to return
  • UK tax residence documentation

Consequences of Breach

If you cannot demonstrate a stable link to the UK and your usage continues predominantly outside the UK, we may:

  • Apply roaming surcharges to all usage
  • Restrict your access to roaming services
  • Suspend or terminate your service

These stable‑link requirements are applied as a commercial policy to ensure roaming services are used for periodic travel, and are not mandated by UK law.

4.6 Rest of World Roaming

For destinations outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland, standard roaming rates apply. Please refer to our Roaming Destinations and Pricing Guide or contact customer support for specific destination rates.

You may purchase destination-specific travel eSIMs for better value when travelling outside Europe.
